If the population of the Earth was reduced to that of a small village with 100 people, it would look something like this: Courtesy of http://snipurl.com/fw9s
57 Asians 21 Europeans 14 Americans (northern and southern) 8 Africans
52 women 48 men
70 coloured-skins 30 caucasians
89 heterosexuals 11 homosexuals
6 people would own 59% of the whole world wealth and all of them will be from the United States of America
80 would have bad living conditions
70 would be uneducated
50 would be underfed
1 would die
2 would be born
1 would have a computer
1 (only one) will have higher education
Note how 6% of the inhabitants ( all from the U.S. ) would own virtually 60% of the wealth and 80% of this village would be existing in bad living conditions.
Now, wouldn't this be the probable cause of dissent and terrorism ~ the 80% of the village who would like to have better living conditions and are all virtually malnourished and uneducated.
Seen in this perspective, what should our priorities be ?
Should we continue to arm the world and gain wealth and power at the expense of 80% of our neighbors ~ who dispise us for our selfishness and arrogance ~ or should we be reaching out a hand to our neighbors and feeding and educating them so that we can all live in harmony and peace. Here are the hard facts;
$147 billion: Amount spent on the Iraq War and occupation as of January 2005. $165 billion: Annual amount going to U.S. military contractors.
World Game Institute annual estimates • Eliminate Starvation and Malnutrition ($19 billion) • Provide Shelter ($21 billion) • Remove Landmines ($4 billion) • Eliminate Nuclear Weapons ($7 billion) • Refugee Relief ($5 billion) • Eliminate Illiteracy ($5 billion) • Provide Clean, Safe Water ($10 billion) • Stabilize Population ($10.5 billion) • Prevent Soil Erosion ($24 billion)
840 million people go hungry everyday.
The answer is self obvious and when seen from this point of view, you can clearly see that there is a real need in our world village for commonality,
understanding, empathy, altruism, social justice and cooperation.
These are traits which have always led to the survival of a species ~ for we most certainly have reached a decisive point in human evolution where the only way forward is in the direction of a common convergence ~ where we see ourselves as a united village where each citizen, regardless of their color or nationality, is our neighbor and friend.
