Dear Dr Roland
Sorry about the Gonzales supreme court prediction.
Cheney pulled the Gonzales nomination because the White House is under seige and they need him to keep Special Prosecutor " Bulldog " Fitzgerald at bay in the growing Plamegate scandal.
Cheney has now been implicated through his chief of Staff Libby and it's time to circle the wagons . We are just seeing the tip of an iceberg of deceit, scandal and abuse of power that, if fully revealed, by Fitzgerald, would and should bring impeachment proceedings.
As to Judge Roberts nomination to the Supreme Court ~ he is
A BORK IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING .
He is a stealth candidate with a thin paper trail but definitely in the conservative mold of Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas .
If he doesn't directly answer Sen Charles Schumer's and Dick Durbin's questions at the Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings in September ~ there will be a filibuster ~ too much is at stake.
He's not without baggage .
His narrow interpretation of the Constitution in last years fourth Amendment case in an opinion upholding the arrest of a 12-year-old girl for eating a single French fry in a Washington, D.C., Metrorail station, while on her way home from junior high school, speaks volumes about his legal mindset. It is contrary to a great deal of modern Supreme Court case law from protection against wiretapping to protection of the right to choose.
He went to Florida and had an extensive low-profile role as an advisor to the Bush team during the 2000 presidential recount fight. This should be closely scrutinized and questioned.
His wife works for a firm that facilitates global satellite system projects and her firm is targeting Iraq reconstruction.
Perhaps it will surprise few people that Pillsbury Winthrop, where Ms. Roberts is a partner, is offering its services for a newly privatized Iraq.
This is an extremely important appointment and will have lasting effects on the Republic ~ long after Bush retires or is impeached. Pehaps Jay Leno said it best last night;
" You realize he is only 50 years old. He could serve on the court for the next 40 years. So he could still be there when we pull out of Iraq."
An Iraq which is currently in a growing civil war, is a Pandora's Box of corporate corruption ~ and is also aligning itself with Iran ~ but that's another story.
As I mentioned in my previous message ~ Bolton will get an interim appointment by Bush, during the August recess, or be used as a bargaining chip to ease Roberts confirmation.
Under those circumstances the lesser of two evils would be Bolton ~ who will be under a leash at the U.N whereas Roberts will be far more dangerous to our civil liberties on the Supreme Court.
Enough for now ~ keep up the good work.
