BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN REVIEW / ROLAND
There is no use journeying to the mountain when the mountain is within: Allen L Roland
From the opening single guitar string note against a bleak Wyoming landscape ~ Brokeback Mountain is a metaphor for the grey world that exists in a world without love.
I am talking about a deep love and intimacy ( into-me-see ) that we all long for and most run away from .
Ennis Del Mar ( Heath Ledger ) and Jack Twist ( Jake Gyllenhaal ) fall into that quicksand while herding sheep on a mountain range.
Neither realizes that what they have really experienced is a profound experience of themselves ~ which they have externalized on the other.
Instead of sharing those hidden depths with their wifes or others ~ they both hold onto the feelings, like buried treasure, that they once shared with each other.
Eventually they both self destruct ~ one in bitter aloneness and the other attempting to externalize and recreate those feelings with strangers.
This movie is not about sex . This movie is about the soul connection that comes from sharing deeply wherein sex becomes a celebration of that intimacy.
I can compare it to twin love ~ in that I am a twin.
My twin brother and I were emotionally inseparable the first ten years of our life. Unwanted at birth ~ all we had was each other in utero . We held onto that deep connection until we eventually let other people into that precious depth of intimacy ~ that few can imagine and all long for in relationship.
Ennis and Jack touched that same magic place of inner connectedness but neither was capable of finding it within themselves . That is why this movie is striking a deep and vibrant human question ~ a yearning to understand, as Ennis and Jake tried vainly to wrestle with, the power of love.
For love is not out there to be found but deepest within to be surrendered to ~ for in fully surrendering to love we are, in essence, fully surrendering to and embracing ourselves.
Ennis sensed this when he eventually began to open his heart with his daughter.
That is why every person I have loved deeply is a gift in my life ~ because each one has brought me closer to myself and source.
There is no use journeying to the mountain when the mountain is within .
