In addition to bringing the Bush/Cheney agenda to California, Governor Schwarzenegger is using his platform as a Republican Governor to raise money and build support for President Bush in swing states. This truth was made abundantly clear in 2004 when Governor Schwarzenegger campaigned for Bush/Cheney in Ohio, ensuring his re-election in the last critical days of the campaign.
Earlier this year, President Bush and Vice President Cheney returned the favor - Governor Schwarzenegger recently hired a campaign manager and other staffers direct from the Bush White House.
So as I watched their one and only debate in early May ~ I was open to either candidate but my personal qualification was which one could debate and defeat Schwarzenegger in November.
There were three important observations that made my choice self evident.
1. Westley seemed hollow, measured and self important avoiding eye contact with Angelides in key exchanges. I began to see him as a Joe Lieberman centrist moderate DLC Democrat who bought his way onto the ticket and offered no real choice in November.
2. Angelides came across as the tough and progressive Greek that he is ~ hardened by many campaigns and yet politically savvy, knowledgeable and willing to make the hard choices.
I found myself liking Angelides honesty and not quite trusting the slickness and arrogance of Westley.
3. My decision was made when both candidates responded to the last question ~ which pertained to their feelings about the war in Iraq.
Westley said the centrist moderate politically correct answer being careful not to offend any pro war independents or moderate Republicans.
Angelides, on the other hand, boldly stated that the war was wrong and he would work to bring troops home as soon as possible.
It was at that moment that I realized that the fearless Greek, Phil Angelides, was the ideal progressive candidate to not only represent the Democratic party but to handily defeat Arnold in November.
