UNANSWERED PROBLEMS OF ELECTRONIC VOTING
ELECTORAL JUSTICE ~ 'A SINGLE PERSON COULD SWING AN ELECTION' BY MANIPULATING ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES : BRENNAN CENTER FOR JUSTICE
After witnessing the recent Mexico voting debacle and the 2004 Ohio voting irregularities ~ it's crucial for all Americans to now put pressure on Congress to ensure a fair vote, audits and paper trail for the November mid-term elections.

A new report on electronic voting machines by New York University's Brennan Center for Justice -- "billed as the most authoritative to date" -- finds that "it would take only one person, with a sophisticated technical knowledge and timely access to the software that runs the voting machines, to change the outcome" of an election.
The report concludes "that the three major electronic voting systems in use have significant security and reliability vulnerabilities," but that "most of these vulnerabilities can be overcome by auditing printed voting records to spot irregularities. Unfortunately, "while 26 states require paper records of votes, fewer than half of those require regular audits."
Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) has proposed the "gold standard" verified voting bill, which includes "the requirement of a paper audit trail for all electronic voting machines, random audits, and public availability of all code used in elections." Holt said yesterday that the Brennan Center report had confirmed the frightening fact that "electronic machines are all vulnerable to error or manipulation that could change the outcome of elections. We ignore this possibility at our peril.”
