CAN WE ALL SURVIVE THE BUSH PRESIDENCY ?
As we begin to survey the extensive shocking damage of the Bush Administration, much of which will be discovered later, new movies like WALL-E gently remind us that we are running out of time to change our precious planet : Allen L Roland
I saw WALL-E last last night and it was cute and somewhat prophetic ~ see my post of 5/29/07 where I comment on the Pacific Ocean plastic patch, about the size of texas, that is entering and threatening our food system. http://blogs.salon.com/0002255/2007/05/29.html
In that post I also show how polluters have flourished under the Bush administration : "Environmental enforcement efforts by the U.S. EPA and the Justice Department have plummeted over the last five years, resulting in a 38 percent decline in criminal fines and a 25 percent drop in civil penalties, according to a new report from the nonprofit Environmental Integrity Project (EIP)."
But our children instinctively seem to understand what we are doing to ourselves ~ as Frank Rich, N.Y.Times, reports ~ "One of the great things about art, including popular art, is that it can hit audiences at a profound level beyond words. That includes children. The kids at 'Wall-E' were never restless, despite the movie's often melancholy mood and few belly laughs. They seemed to instinctually understand what 'Wall-E' was saying; they didn't pepper their chaperones with questions along the way. At the end they clapped their small hands. What they applauded was not some banal cartoonish triumph of good over evil but a gentle, if unmistakable, summons to remake the world before time runs out." http://www.truthout.org/article/wall-e-president
The damage the Bush administration has infllicted on both the moral integrity and financial underpinnings of our country is truly staggering ~ but the full extent won't be known until Bush and his equally culpable mentor, Dick Cheney, leave office.
Perhaps only satire can give justice to this outrage and so I turn to the Onion to provide their satirical perspective. |
