YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE ~ You can try to escape from what you fear, but eventually you will have to face it. The saying originated in the United States in the 1940s, and is attributed to the American boxer Joe Louis (1914-81), who was quoted thus on the eve of his fight with the light heavyweight champion Billy Conn. Soon President Obama will no longer be able to offer cover to Dick Cheney as the Congressional bloodhounds follow his tracks back to the Bush Oval Office ~ where they originally all started.
As recently as July 2008, Seymour Hersh published a report that the White House was exploiting technical differences between defense and intelligence operations in order to get around briefing Congress on pursuing "high value targets" in Iran through covert action ~ "There is a growing realization among some legislators that the Bush administration, in recent years, has conflated what is an intelligence operation and what is a military one in order to avoid fully informing Congress about what it is doing," he wrote then.
As William Rivers Pitt wrote in Truthout on July 13th ~ " Nobody is talking about health care now, or Ghana or nuclear reduction deals with the Russians. Just like that, all discussion has once again turned to the actions and activities of the Bush administration. President Obama has been acting as if only two options - ignorance or adoption - are available to deal with these Bush-era eruptions, because he does not want his presidency to become overwhelmed by the third available option: investigation and prosecution. Guess what? The Obama administration is already being overwhelmed, and will continue to lose ground every time another one of these wretched revelations hits the headlines, which they will, over and over again.. And believe me, the pandora's Box of wretched revelations that occurred during the Cheney/Bush administration is just beginning to open and they all lead to Cheney.
Let the subpoenas fly ! The problem is there's enormous political pressure, beginning with President Obama, to sweep the past under the rug. The fact Attorney General Holder is sending signals that he may move forward despite this pressure shows real courage. But courage alone is not enough. We need action.
