Dept. of Bully Pulpits
I imagine many of you pilgrims and seekers found an email from MoveOn.org in your inboxes, yesterday:
Dear MoveOn member,
Today the GOP crossed the line. In their first ad for the 2004 election, they implicitly accuse Democratic presidential candidates of "attacking the president for attacking terrorists." The ad doesn't question opponents' ideas, it questions their commitment to America. But there is nothing more un-American than attacking an adversary's patriotism for political gain.
We need to fight back.
Well, I got out my credit card and ponied up to MoveOn for the nth time, and made another contribution to Dean as well. We Nefties or Weberals are certainly mobilized and have already proved a potent political force.
The question is, are there more of us (y’know—pinkos, commies, faggots, and traitors—in short all those who oppose the Bush League) than there are of them (fundies, dumbocrats, war profiteers, mouth-breathing peckerwood double digit IQ good ol' boy natural born Texans, and my brother-in-law)?
I believe the answer is yes, barely, as was shown in the last election, when Gore, who in spite of a lackluster campaign, won the popular vote but failed to get a plurality of the Supremes.
The next question is, can we get absolutely every man jack and jill eligible to vote that opposes Bush, to come out and cast their ballots? The third question is, will our votes be counted? The election goes to the side that gets their voters out, and makes sure their votes are counted, at least once.
I have questions. Four more years in the wilderness with the burning Bush is not the answer to any of them. The answer I want is YES: Yes, I am angry; yes, I will speak out; yes, I will contribute; yes, I will vote. Just say yes.
So there.
