I sat on the front porch watching fireflies last night. Tonight I watched an episode of the late lamented SF tv series Firefly on DVD, parked on my friends' couch. Fireflies give me hope. As long as there are fireflies in the spring, I know we haven't killed the planet yet. The tv series Firefly was killed by the strenuously incompetent paladins of programming at, you guessed it, the FOX network. It was such an underground, cult hit with SF fans that it is being revived as a movie, with the original cast and writer. So there is hope, also, for some genuine, witty, gritty SF on film.
