GRENDEL'S LAUNDRY LIST: READING FOR PRESIDENTS DAY

ILLUSTRATED:

Let me conjure you, in the name of our common country,

as you value your own sacred honor,

as you respect the rights of humanity,

and as you regard the military and national character of America,

to express your utmost horror and detestation of the man who wishes,

under any specious pretenses, to overturn the liberties of our country,

and who wickedly attempts to open the floodgates of civil discord

and deluge our rising empire in blood.

By thus determining and thus acting,

you will pursue the plain and direct road.

You will defeat the insidious designs of our enemies,

who are compelled to resort from open force to secret artifice.

You will give one more distinguished proof of unexampled patriotism and patient virtue,

rising superior to the pressure of the most complicated sufferings.

And you will, by the dignity of your conduct, afford occasion for posterity to say,

when speaking of the glorious example you have exhibited to mankind,

"Had this day been wanting, the world had never seen the last stage

of perfection to which human nature is capable of attaining."

General George Washington to the Officers of the Continental Army, March 15, 1783

At the end of the Revolutionary War, in March of 1783, officers of the Continental Army met in New York, angry that Congress had failed to honor its promises as regards the salaries, pensions, and other funds owed them. Insurrection was in the air. A military revolt against the civilian government for redress of their perceived grievances was proposed by means of anonymous letters, and further suggested that Washington himself could be persuaded to lead it. The officers gathered in a church on the Ides of March basically to get down to the business of plotting a coup against the fledgling American democracy. General Washington unexpectedly showed up. He refused to be their Caesar. Washington "conjured" his officers with such effect that in the end many of them were in tears, moved and ashamed. Washington had made the revolt impossible by force of personality alone. George Washington could have been George the First of America. He refused to be Caesar. A strong and ambitious leader turned down his chance to achieve absolute power. How many times has that happened in Human History? Doesn't it make you feel you're looking down the wrong end of the telescope?

How a Jesus Fish Helped Create the Matrix

The Jesus/Darwin fish wars perpetuate the image of a war between science and religion.  Nonetheless, the Jesus fish did play a key role in the evolution of modern science fiction--and with it, aided in popularizing its underlying science of complex adaptive systems.*

Robert Crumb's art meets Phillip K. Dick's religious psychosis at the Blingdom of God. Read it all HERE.
