OKIE ARCANA: PISTOL PETE, STILLWATER

Stump art aka chainsaw sculpture is a native art form which flourishes in Oklahoma. Take one dead or unwanted tree, and whittle the trunk with a chainsaw, until a masterpiece is revealed. Stillwater is the home of Oklahoma State University, and the figure so lovingly delineated in this fine example is Pistol Pete, the mascot of the OSU football team, who are nicknamed the "Cowpokes." The chainsaw artist is obviously a loyal fan of the home team, and patriotic too. Look at the fine detail:

Pete is in no doubt of his manhood, unlike the Golden Driller in Tulsa. who has no crotch.

Gives the old slang term "having a woody" a new lift.

See what I mean?

The old cowpoke stands ready.
