SCENIC TULSA: HAMBURGER HEAVEN

RON'S HAMBURGERS AND CHILI
Ron's was the finest exemplar of a Tulsa institution: locally owned hamburger joints. There are many burger shacks in this burg but the Ron's on 15th St. just off Harvard was the class of the breed. I say was because this old Ron's has closed, and there will no more sausage cheeseburger and fries forever. The grill has gone cold and we will hear the hissing of ground meat on hot metal no more. Now, mind you, Ron's has successfully expanded into a local chain, and I wish them well. But the shack on 15th Street was where you could have the geniune experience of a little grill and counter operation.* You sat at the counter, on one of those round metal pedestal stools with seats upholstered in cracked red vinyl, sometimes mended with duct tape. You gave your order most likely to the person who cooked the burgers, and you could watch them in action at the grill. Soon enough your own personal heart attack on a plate would be slid in front of you, just the way you ordered it.
