SCENIC TULSA: THE REDBUD IN MARCH

REDBUD BLOSSOMS AGAINST GREY SKY

Called Judas, this tree

hangs magenta blossoms—March

silvers the potter's field.

There are very many Redbud trees in Tulsa. Redbuds are rather drab, small trees, but they become very decorative with their distinctive blossoms in late winter/early spring. In Crowtime Redbuds provide a week or three of ethereal ornament to the lawns and gardens of Tulsa. Redbuds also grow wild throughout the state, glowing among the blackjack and scrub oaks. I tend to think of them as heralds of Crowtime, native and unique to Oklahoma, but of course that is not true. I've seen Redbuds in Ohio and Indiana, and the species (Cercis canadesis) must be widespread. I found out recently that they are also called "Judas Trees."
