The Lone Liberal
My Son, James gave me this name 7 years ago while we were driving home from a Christmas visit at my parents. I was raised to be a committed active citizen of the Republican variety. All my siblings are still Grand Old Party activists, loyal Rush Limbo listeners and my parents always have a photo of the highest elected republican politician on display in their kitchen. In contrast, I am a committed Wellstone Liberal! Therefore, you can imagine the convoluted cantankerous quality to our political conversations.

Dear Mothers of Iraq

I keep thinking about you and your children. Here in America, the news commentators instruct parents on how to explain the horror of war to our children if they happen to view it on TV. What are you saying to your children? How are you soothing them to sleep at night?

Our threat level was raised back up to orange. We have been instructed to purchase plastic and duct tape to keep our children safe from a possible bio or chemical attacks and to be generally alert and vigilant. What preparedness recommendations have you gotten from your government?

Our President promises you and us that our military will try to be very careful about how we drop our bombs. He promises you and us that if you can keep your children alive, we are going to transform their future! You will have the opportunity to vote and we will make sure your children have all the food and medicine and democratic education they need, just like we do. Does that promise make you feel as secure as it does me?

I promise to keep praying for all our children.

War Poem

( my war response-written years ago-but a good summation of my perspective)

The one and the many

Inseparable from the whole,

Illusion divisions drawn by straight steal edged minds

Silently suffocate All

It is only Us

Who deny

Our power to do harm,

Our power to do good,

who do harm,

so much and so many...

My Son, James gave me this name 7 years ago during our drive home from a Christmas visit at my parents. I was raised to be a committed active citizen of the Republican variety. Our family weekend activities included church, skiing and republican fund raisings events.

The mission I will attempt to accomplish with this blogg is to document and explore the questions that plague and inspire me about democracy, globalization, and the status of the present predicament of being a liberal in the world today.
