The Lone Liberal
My Son, James gave me this name 7 years ago while we were driving home from a Christmas visit at my parents. I was raised to be a committed active citizen of the Republican variety. All my siblings are still Grand Old Party activists, loyal Rush Limbo listeners and my parents always have a photo of the highest elected republican politician on display in their kitchen. In contrast, I am a committed Wellstone Liberal! Therefore, you can imagine the convoluted cantankerous quality to our political conversations.

Things that I am thinking about today beside All war, All the time:

I believe the philosophical question of our time is:

Is there one truth or many truths?

This is the theme underlying in all the rhetoric on both side of the conservative/liberal debate-To Be Continued

Things that make me a hopeful liberal:

  • Our constitution- Allows us to hold the government accountable to live up to the stated Ideals. Example: the civil rights movements/legislation.
  • The fact that Jessie Venture was elected- proof that your vote does count! ( I did not vote for Jessie, but yesterday it occurred to me that the fact that he was able to be elected is a ray of hope)

Things that make me discouraged liberal:

  • Voter turn out: Even if you believe that people only act from self interest, why do the majority of American citizens think that voting has no effect on their lives? (this is a topic I will go into in more detail later)
  • The fact that Jessie Venture was elected- proof that it doesn't make that much difference who you vote for AND that the Democratic party in MN continues to run candidates that are members of an "aristocracy" ( I did not vote for Jessie)
  • There is not one Democrat running for President who inspires me to feel passionate.
