If you consider the Bush administration a success, then how do you define failure?

Unprotected Sex With Iraq

Declaring the invasion of Iraq to have been a good idea because you see the Iraqis celebrate in the street at the moment of liberation is like declaring unprotected teenage casual sex to be a good idea because you see how much they enjoyed it in the moments immediately following.  The real concequences might not show up for a long time, and they could be profound, permanent and devastating.

On the subject of concequences, I found a good entry on some of the potential concequences of both military intervention and many alternatives here. It's well worth your time. And it's got a cool map! (I love maps.)

Moral Outrage Is Reserved For Blowjobs

Well, I've had a few short thoughts over the weekend. I'll post them over the course of the day.

First of all, the administration seems to have dropped all pretense that they are doing anything but doling out favors to their buddies at taxpayer expense, what with the Halliburton and Bechtel contracts, and their tax cut proposals. Perhaps this graft is reassurance to big business that they will still get a piece of the action despite the primacy of the neocon hawks, whose draconian utopia isn't necessarily in line with the amoral values of traditional big business conservatives. (To my understanding, while this war is/was primarily about oil, it's not so much about keeping oil cheap or making life easier for the oil companies, so much as it's about controlling oil as an instrument of geo-strategic power.) Or perhaps the Bushies just feel politically invincible now, and feel it's time to pass out the goodies while the gettin' is good. The saddest thing is that the press barely even pays attention anymore. I guess their greatest moral outrage is reserved for blowjobs.

More to come...
