The Ignorance Is Simply Astounding
Two short thoughts today:
One, I couldn't bring myself to watch Bush's shameless Top Gun publicity stunt live last week, but I did catch pieces afterwards. I won't get into the speech itself. I'm sure others have that covered. Afterwards, however, I had C-Span on in the background when they had the pro and con callers getting their two cents in. There was one woman who gushed that she was so proud to finally have a president who was not ashamed to call himself a Christian.
Alright, lemme be brief. Carter: Southern Baptist and our first self-proclaimed born-again president (at least in the day of the modern media). Clinton: Southern Baptist. Gore: born-again Southern Baptist. Reagan: rarely went to church. Bush Jr.: every mainstream Christian denomination except Southern Baptist opposed his war. And his own denomination declared that "It violates international law, it violates God's law and the teachings of Jesus Christ."
The ignorance is simply astounding.
Two, Joe Conason pointed to two articles on the sheer awfulness of Bush's publicity stunt. Paul Krugman talks about the dangerous symbolism for a country that has a 227 year tradition of consciously civilian Commanders-in-Chief. And the Daily Howler illustrates in sharp relief how startling the silence of the press is on Bush's AWOL year, in comparison to the pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth we endured over Whitewater and all the rest.
"Liberal media" my ass!
Meanwhile, I've been working on a couple of longer, journal-type entries that I've bogged down on. I might break them up and post what I've got now, writing the rest when I can find the time and mental energy.
