"Christian" Does Not Equal "Radical Right Wing Republican"
On NPR today, there was a story about Bush's latest creep nominated to the federal bench. The story stated that he was opposed by almost every single women's, minorities', environmental, education and civil rights group in the country, but he was endorsed by both conservative and "Christian" groups.
Refering to William Pryor's religious defenders broadly as "Christian" groups makes about as much sense as refering to the Klan simply as a "White" group. Christians feature prominently in the anti-Bush demonstrations I attend most Mondays. Christians were the primary force behind the civil rights movement. Most Christian denominations strongly opposed Bush's war in Iraq. Their faith demands that they be on the moral side of these issues. Why should these good people of conscience be tarred with this group association? There are millions upon millions upon millions of good, moral, consciencious Christians in this country who do not deserve this slander. We must not let Robertson and Falwell and Reed and Bennet define Christianity any more than we should let Bush and Rumsfeld and Ashcroft and Fleischer define patriotism.
