Thoughts on Howard Dean
I attended a Howard Dean rally last night. I'm still trying to make up my mind among the Democratic contenders, but he is beginning to distinguish himself. My hesitation about him has been about his electability. Bob Graham, it seems, would be better able to capture the votes of those "mushy middle" voters who voted for the moderate candidate Bush, and have been rewarded with extremist President Bush.
But Dean has got an impressive and passionate grassroots base. He may lose some at the center margin due to the "civil unions" issue, but I'm beginning to believe that those could be outweighed by erstwhile Greens and disillusioned Democrats who would be energized by his campaign. He really did look Presidential yesterday, and he feels a lot more real than most of the other "first tier" Dem candidates.
Now if only he can do something about his photo-op smile. Man, can that thing be creepy.
