Spend-and-Borrow Republicans

In our quest to develop memes that will assist the Dems in unseating the Bushies, I have come up with another idea. "The last thing this country needs is four more years under the management of these spend-and-borrow Republicans!" Or perhaps this would sound better: "These credit line Republicans are wrecking our economy!"

We need to develop a language to reflect the fact that for a generation now, the common wisdom that Republicans stand for fiscal responsibility while the Democrats are spendthrifts, has been out of step with reality. This generalization should have disappeared along with polyester double-knit leisure suits and lambchop sideburns.

"Spend-and-borrow Republicans" mirrors the tired old charge of "tax-and-spend liberals," and really cannot be plausibly denied. Unfortunately, while "spend-and-borrow" mirrors "tax-and-spend" closely, it doesn't seem to roll off the tongue like "tax-and-spend" does. That's why I came up with "credit line Republicans" as well.

I believe this is a potentially powerful meme, touching that "protestant work ethic" nerve in the American psyche, and showing that Republicans seem to believe that our government shouldn't have to work for a living. I'd like feedback on the two variations, or on any other suggestions you may have. And please, start using either of them in conversation. Spread it around, and see what resonates with people.
