Fair and Balanced
Alright, so I'm really, really late for "Fair and Balanced Day." But one thing I've been thinking about is this: what would a truly fair and balanced TV network look like? I've decided that the best example we have is C-SPAN. At least on the weekends.
One of my jobs is freelance, and I sometimes work at home over the weekends, with the TV on in the background. I usually check out what they're covering on C-SPAN and C-SPAN 2's "Book TV." Basically, if you have an event, they'll put a camera and a mike in front of you. I find that some weekends, I'm really engrossed by the author of some really nerdy (and I mean that in a good way) historical or scientific book. Sometimes I'm fired up by their coverage of some lefty convention or symposium or rally. Just as often it seems, I run screaming as they broadcast the brain droppings of Ann "Thrax" Coulter, or David Horowitz. There's little to no editorializing, people just have the mike.
BTW: Speaking of "Fair and Balanced," I read Franken's "Fair and Balanced" book in less than four days (I'm usually a pretty slow reader). Good reading. Choke on it, O'Reilly. (And Hannity. And Coulter. And Bush and Cheney and all the rest.)
