Small Coincidences
A couple of coincidences about myself and figures in the news that I've read about recently:
First: I was inspired to write my Virtually Voting post recently in part by the actions of Nathaniel Heatwole. I feel that when neither the press nor the government is doing its job properly, citizens must sometimes take matters in their own hands and commit acts of civil disobedience to draw the public's attention to what is important. As far as I am concerned, Mr. Heatwole is a patriotic public servant and a hero in the greatest of American traditions. He saw that our government was doing an incompetent job of protecting us and risked a 10-year prison sentence, a large fine and more in order to make us all safer. Well, it now turns out that he is a student at my Alma Mater. I honestly couldn't be much prouder.
Second: I read yesterday that Howard Dean was baptized Catholic, raised Episcopal, and then converted to Congregationalism. I, meanwhile, was baptized Catholic, raised Episcopal, and then became Unitarian (which split off from Congregationalism in the 19th century). Perhaps similar life experiences have something to do with my affinity for the candidate? Not that this point is of any interest to anyone but myself. But then if a blog isn't the place for occasional self involvement, then where the hell is?
