Why are you reading this?

  1. Good question, and one I shouldn’t be such a dick about.  I believe that this format is something actually special.  And yes, special is a stupid word to use here, but I want to convey a tone.  I’m a big fan of Montaigne and the essay and people like DFW, but Montaigne really gets me because he wanted the essay to be a reflection of the writer’s pattern of thought, emphasizing the connections between our jumps in logic and emotion.  And the blog is perfect for that.  It is a map of one’s inner workings, complete with stores of information, and the methods and means to connect them.    It is (or feels like sometimes) Borges’ library.  And that’s kind of comforting, in a Dali-esque, nightmar-y kind of way.

  1. Right.  You need a 2 if you have a 1.  2.  2.  Well.  I live in the north part of Kyoto, and there aren’t tons of foreigners or bloggers up here, so I guess it’s possible to see things you won’t see elsewhere.  And that’s about as honest a number 2 as I can muster.

  1. Wait.  I do have a 3.  I have a digital camera.  So.  Pictures.  Yeah.
