Quotes of the Day "According to Howard Fineman's piece in Newsweek Democratic insiders..." are "Facing a jump-suited juggernaut in George W. Bush." Fineman's laughable description of Bush as a "juggernaut" reveals our true obstacle here. Media is full of Finemans anxious to manufacture, whole cloth, an image of a proud and giant warrior, out of the pathetic, brainless and weak imposter Bush really is. Media remain our real opponent, not Bush. Media are not failing to do what is expected of them, they're doing exactly what is expected of them. - John Polifronio
"Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country". - Hermann Goering, Hitler's Reich-Marshall at the Nuremberg Trials after WWII

'How deep does it go?' Despite two 'successful' wars, billions spent on intelligence, the invasive power of a police state in one country and the destruction of many basic civil liberties in another, according to the L.A. Times, "Monday's bombings in Riyadh drove home with deadly force how little is known about how Al Qaeda has changed and the new dangers the terrorist network poses to the tens of thousands of Americans in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere overseas, officials of both nations said Tuesday."
"This is Saudi Arabia, a fairly unified country with a secret police that at one time rivaled Stalin," Robert Baer, a former CIA case officer in the Middle East and author of a forthcoming book on terrorism and Saudi Arabia, told the Times. "This was a tightly controlled country. When you get a fissure like this [one that the bombings exposed], how deep does it go?"
Danny Glover under fire Danny Glover is next on the hitlist of the rightwing censorship brigade. They are pressuring MCI, the telecommunications company, to drop the actor and activist as a spokeperson because of his outspoken criticism of the Iraq war. The TransAfrica Forum -- Glover is the chairman of its board -- is organizing a campaign asking people to contact MCI and express support for the actor. You can find out how to reach MCI at the organization's website.

Quote of the Day That our own government officials, because of self-serving motives, be considered complicit in terrorist attacks involving American victims is unthinkable.
It is unthinkable, that is, until you begin unavoidably to think it, and then begin to delve into it and the business and personal relationships between the Bush Administration and its corporate patrons and figures in international terrorist organizations, most particularly al-Qa'eda and the bin Laden family.
It is unthinkable until you recall that Unocal, closely affiliated with the Bush Administration, has long lusted to build a pipeline from the oil fields in the Caucasus Basin through Afghanistan.
It is unthinkable until you realize that Halliburton, which still pays Dick Cheney a salary in the millions of dollars per year, is the parent company of the builders of the Afghan pipeline and of the company, Brown & Root, that is responsible for rehabiliting the Iraqi oil industry, a contract that was awarded without competitive bidding.
It is unthinkable until you ponder George W. Bush's well- documented propensity toward vindictiveness, and his desire to get, at any cost, Saddam Hussein's pelt in revenge for his father's 1992 defeat.
It is unthinkable until you become aware that, in the face of approval ratings in a free-fall for Bush, the NORC report that showed Bush losing Florida by 20,000 votes was scheduled to be released on September TWELFTH, and that the economic reports that would have shown America in deficit and in recession were due for release on September THIRTEENTH, 2001, one and two days after the events of 9/11.
And the deeper you delve, the unthinkable becomes more and more unavoidably thinkable, and then you read that the Bush Administration is frustrating all efforts to investigate the events of 9/11, and with a shudder you realize...
THEY REALLY DID IT. What are 2,800 American lives compared to trillions in profits, the enactment of a tyrannical agenda, and unassailable political power? Any actuary will tell you that this would be considered by a businessman to be an "acceptable loss."
But we can't speak of these things. They are, after all, "unthinkable." But deep inside almost every American heart, whether they support or oppose George W. Bush, it is felt as a cold darkness beneath every breath, almost as a axiom.
When detectives investigate the commission of a crime, they first look to motive. Who stood to benefit most from the crime? Then they look to opportunity.
Think it. Ferguson Foont
Editorials Capital Times, Madison, WI A Democrat with a point While the supposed front-runners for the Democratic presidential nomination struggle to triangulate foreign policy issues in a manner that distinguishes them from the currently popular positions of President Bush without being particularly distinctive, Florida Sen. Bob Graham has adopted a different approach. He is telling the truth.

Ha'aretz, Israel The Christian fundamentalists have hooked up with their Jewish allies and created a formidable messianic alignment. The events of September 11, 2001, intensified this Jewish-Christian alliance, which includes some 40 million Americans. "I am very much at home among the Christians who support Israel," Elon stated proudly. "These are people who are wild about Israel and believe in the annexation of Judea and Samaria and even in the transfer of Palestinians from the soil of the Land of Israel. Compared to them, I am considered a dove." |

Howard Coble, chairman of Congress’ Committee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, responded to a caller on a radio show who suggested that all Arab Americans be rounded up and incarcerated to prevent terrorist attacks. Coble said that might not be necessary today, but that it was "appropriate at the time" during World War II when we locked up Japanese families. |

Znet.org Back To The Docks The war didn't start and won't end in Iraq, and the system behind it won't end with President Bush. It's one piece of a bigger war for empire that includes three interlocking parts: military war and occupation, economic war to impose corporate globalization on the world, and war at home including racism, environmental injustice, attacks on civil liberties, and cuts in our basic services. |
