Quotes of the Day
"The Bush image is not invincible; it is the most hollow thing imaginable. It is built on lies, obscene amounts of money, and war; the one thing it does not contain is life. Not the lives of Iraqi civilians killed or maimed yet never mentioned or mourned, nor the lives of soldiers sent to Iraq without baseline health screenings, or veterans whose benefits are being cut, or the poor, seniors, and kids here at home who are losing government programs they desperately need to survive"... by Linda O'Brien, A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY
Statement by Senator James Jeffords:
"As the Independent Senator from Vermont, I have worked with Governor Howard Dean and I know his long-standing record. I am disappointed to see leaders of the Democratic Leadership Council characterize his positions as extreme and elitist, and call on them to stop their divisive tactics. Since when did it become extreme and elitist to balance the budget, extend health care coverage, offer equal educational opportunity and protect our environment? I have heard such charges coming from Republicans most of my political life, but I find it incredible to hear such charges coming from Democrats." --- Sen. James Jeffords (I) Vermont
Senator Pat Leahy (D-VT):
“Lumping Governor Dean with the so-called “liberal elitist” wing of our party will make Vermonters of all political stripes chuckle Governor Dean’s twelve year record in the statehouse was not liberal, conservative or elitist. He inherited a deficit, balanced the budget, pinched pennies, provided healthcare to all Vermont’s children, protected the environment and created jobs. That is a record of accomplishment, achieved with the broad support of Republicans and Democrats in Vermont.”
Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA):
“When I go home every weekend, my constituents talk to me about health care, education and the economy. Dr. Howard Dean has an outstanding record of achievement in all of these areas. As governor, 96% of Vermont’s children had health coverage, and an additional 3% were eligible. He passed fiscally responsible budgets each and every year. He built a strong educational system, and as a result, Vermont’s students rank 6th in the country in overall performance. Dr. Dean’s record is one that ALL Democrats can be proud of.

Missing in action: The Democratic Party By Ernest Partridge Co-editor of The Crisis Papers and Online Journal Contributing Writer
It is plain for anyone with elementary common sense, not blinded by Bushian dogma and wishful thinking, that the Busheviks are leading this country straightaway to disaster. Our international debt is now above $3 trillion and rising, and Bushonomics is bound to add several trillions to the national debt. The euro is rising as the dollar falls, and the euro may soon become the preferred international currency, with dreadful repercussions to the American economy. Our educational institutions, physical infrastructure and social services are all being trashed, and American pre-eminence in scientific and technological research and development is fading fast. "The outside world," treated so casually and contemptuously by the Bush regime, supplies us with the raw materials (most significantly, petroleum) that feeds our economy. Thus we are at the mercy of "those foreigners." When they've had their fill of the Bushista imperial arrogance, watch out! |
