Quote of the Day
It is amazing that persons who think of themselves as defenders of liberty can, in promoting their own financial interests, steal from, lie to and cajole other Progressives. These persons can break the law by commiting acts of terrorism and abuse the trust of others when it benefits their own monetary interests to do so. - Editor

While various groups are still tallying the numbers, the death toll is clearly higher than previous wars. © San Francisco Chronicle Leaving the EPA - Don't Cry for Christie by Laura Flanders Whitman's EPA rolled back anti-pollution enforcement. That's no surprise. She did exactly the same thing in New Jersey. Sure, she backed a $1 billion bond issue to preserve a million acres of open space shortly before she left office and she makes much of her love of wilderness for recreation. But when it comes to protecting the public health, especially the health and welfare of those who live near industrial sites, Whitman left New Jersey with a trail of wreckage behind her. |

© Enviroment News Service House Passes Controversial Wildfire Bill By J.R. Pegg WASHINGTON, DC, May 21, 2003 (ENS) - The U.S. House of Representatives passed a controversial bill Tuesday to increase forest thinning on 20 million acres of federal lands. Critics say the bill, which passed by a vote of 256 to 170, is a million dollar giveaway to the timber industry and has no chance of passing the U.S. Senate. But supporters believe it is a critical step towards better management of federal lands and say the nation must move quickly to reduce the threat from wildfires. |

© Columbia Journalism Review Lies Bought - Unchallenged "Evidence" for War
... (T)he White House propaganda drive began in earnest, with the appearance before television cameras of George Bush and Tony Blair at Camp David. Between them, the two politicians cited a “new” report from the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency that allegedly stated that Iraq was “six months away” from building a nuclear weapon. “I don’t know what more evidence we need,” declared the president. |

Editorial of the Day FreeSpeech.org Joel Kovel writes in Tikkun Magazine: "The racist character of the Zionist state is truth so hard to bear by those who believe in Israel’s fundamental legitimacy. But it also disintegrates this belief, because racism at this level, where a whole people is destroyed so that another people might thrive, epitomizes the meaning of a crime against humanity. All claims of being “the only democracy in the Middle East,” or of saving Jews from anti-Semitic oppression, or having fine symphony orchestras and universities, fade in its glare." |
