Quote of the Day
© Adrianna Huffington I've been racking my brain, trying to reconcile the ever-widening chasm between what the White House claims to be true and what is actually true. After all, we know the president and his men are not stupid. And despite the tidal wave of misinformation pouring out of their mouths, I don't believe they are consciously lying. The best explanation I can come up with for the growing gap between their rhetoric and reality is that we are being governed by a gang of out and out fanatics.

© N.Y. Times/Working for Change Stating the obvious, by By PAUL KRUGMAN The lunatics are now in charge of the asylum." So wrote the normally staid Financial Times, traditionally the voice of solid British business opinion, when surveying last week's tax bill. Indeed, the legislation is doubly absurd: the gimmicks used to make an $800-billion-plus tax cut carry an official price tag of only $320 billion are a joke, yet the cost without the gimmicks is so large that the nation can't possibly afford it while keeping its other promises.
Good for The Financial Times. It seems that stating the obvious has now, finally, become respectable.
It's no secret that right-wing ideologues want to abolish programs Americans take for granted. But not long ago, to suggest that the Bush administration's policies might actually be driven by those ideologues — that the administration was deliberately setting the country up for a fiscal crisis in which popular social programs could be sharply cut — was to be accused of spouting conspiracy theories.

© Village Voice, NYC Where Is Nelson Mandela? by Nat Hentoff Black U.S. Leaders Also Silent "Very disappointing," said Akwei, "is that there has been such little visible public concern anywhere for the suffering of the black people of Zimbabwe. And that includes black leaders in the United States. Even some of those who eventually became involved in protesting the slavery and genocide in Sudan have not been heard from about Zimbabwe." .... |

© This Modern World, by Tom Tomorrow Astroturf Update Through its GOP Team Leader site, the Republican Party officially encourages people to cut-and-paste Republican talking points, sign their own names, and email them to news media as letters to the editor purportedly written by average, concerned citizens. There's a word for this. Actually there are several: deception, fraud, deceit, sham, hoax--take your choice. And it gets better: for partaking in this act of officially-sanctioned deception, GOP Team Leaders are awarded points which can be redeemed for swag such as tote bags and caps and so on.... |

Editorials of the Day
In the Public Interest, by Ralph Nader Let Technology Work for People Do new technologies trump power and decentralize it as some technophiles believe? Not if repressive power gets there first.
Here are three examples from the federal government where either corporate or political power has blocked technology from helping you assess your elected Representatives and receive a more efficient government.
Log onto the website of your Congressional Representatives. Over 95 percent of members of the House and Senate still do not place their voting record there in a clear, timely and promptly retrievable fashion. |
