News & Commentary
Things will come to a head in this country before the next election - all of the talk in the wind lately of what the administration will do to create a military government and scrap the constitution, if there's another terrorist attack. My strong belief is that this administration "let" the WTC attack happen to allow themselves the leeway to go forward with the grab for Afghan gas, poppies and Iraqi oil, let alone the "Patriot" Act. I watched the economy tank after Bush took office, I think because of people's fear. Then I've seen Bush dismantle programs and let his buddies pick up the pieces, just like the crumbling of the Soviet Union. Doesn't it seem strange that the head of the "free" world is the son of the CIA chief as is the president of Russia the ex-KGB chief and in the middle east Sharon is the ex-chief of Mossad? Each of these 3 bums are using the same tactics to consolidate power, in their respective fiefdoms: Chechnya, Palestine and GWB's Taliban, all bringing fear so the Great Leader can offer his protection racket. - Gary Cook, Editor, Progressive Daily News.

9 / 1 1: G E T T I N G T O T H E T R U T H Why is our government lying to us about what really happened?
Do you know:
- On September 9th the president had a war plan
on his desk to go into Afghanistan?
- The hijackers names were not on the passenger lists?
- There were up to 23 individually recorded warnings
from a total of 11 allies?
- FEMA agents were already in New York on Sept. 10th?
- Government officials were warned not to fly on 9/11?
- The debris at Ground Zero was removed without forensic examination, shipped to China and melted down?
- The Bush and bin Laden families have been
doing business together since the late 70s?
- The Bush administration tried to obstruct
the investigation from the start?
- This just begins to scratch the surface?

United Nations Says Coalition Forces, NATO Must Help End Afghan Drug Trade The Taliban's ban on cultivating the opium poppy, enforced during its last year in power, caused opium production to fall from a peak of 4,565 tons in 1999 to 185 tons in 2001, the UN said at the time. The al-Qaeda terrorist network and the Taliban militia that was ousted in Afghanistan in December 2001 are using proceeds from drug trafficking to fund their activities, UN and U.S. officials have said. Afghanistan is the world's largest opium producer. The UN estimates 1.7 million people in the country of 28 million people are directly involved in cultivating the opium poppy, the raw ingredient in heroin.

Do you want to tell us what was your bottom line assessment about what was underneath the intelligence failure in Iraq or whether it was an intelligence failure?
SEN. PAT ROBERTS: I would love to tell you but I don't think I can do that. Right now it is embargoed for members only. And we're asking members a, to read it and I'm sure they will -- and b, to educate themselves and then to come back next Thursday with any suggestions for improvement -- any other area they would like to go into. Any expansion they would like to go into. They'll have another two weeks. This is a very comprehensive report, it's very tough reading. It's very dense but it's very important.

Bush had much evidence at odds with CIA Now that Mr. Blix is looking better, Mr. Bush argues that even if the intelligence was wrong, his decision to invade was right. That case can certainly be made. Some people supported the war who did not buy the administration's rationale. But that's not the most pressing issue at this stage. The issues are how the war was sold, whether the administration can be trusted, whether the president can trust his intelligence, and whether he had closed his mind to all other input.

Message from Gov. Howard Dean
Eleven months ago, when few people knew our campaign existed, I asked the Democratic Party leadership some fundamental questions:
Why were so many Democrats in Washington supporting George Bush's unilateral war in Iraq?
Why were they supporting No Child Left Behind?
Why were they voting for the president's reckless tax cuts?
I am still waiting for the answers. The American people deserve the answers.
Today, all my opponents are talking the talk. Even those who voted for the war now speak like they opposed it. Those who voted for No Child Left Behind now criticize it. And those who shrank from confrontation in the face of polls and pundits now compete to outdo each other in their condemnation of George W. Bush.
But in 2004, Democrats must decide: Who will stand up for you? And who will stand up against George W. Bush? I believe only someone who has consistently and firmly stood for change -- even when it wasn't politically popular -- can truly lead this great struggle.
And I need your help today to raise the funds we need to take back the Democratic Party and defeat George Bush:
Imagine 2005. Radical Republicans of the Bush-DeLay school will push their divisive agenda. When that happens, who will stand up for you?
A Washington insider who shifts with every poll? Who cuts deals that sell out the interests of ordinary Americans, and who has spent decades collaborating with the special interests that fuel his campaigns?
Or someone from outside Washington, truly independent, and ready to do what's right? As President, I will stand up for you -- I won't just say it. You know I will do it -- because I have done it. And we can stand up for all Americans if we stand together.
The Washington insiders are spending millions in paid advertisements to try to persuade voters that they'll stand up to the system they've been part of for years. Many of these ads will attack us.
It's extremely important that we go into the coming primaries with the resources we need. Can I count on your help today?
Thank you for everything you do. Governor Howard Dean, M.D. |

In a win for energy independence and good jobs, California, New York, and Pennsylvania have all announced initiatives this week to invest in energy alternatives.
The Apollo Alliance is working to bring key constituencies together in these states to build a better energy future.
The Apollo Alliance joined California State Treasurer Phil Angelides as he announced a 1.5 billion dollar investment in state pension funds to go towards clean and alternative energy technology. Angelides's announcement comes two weeks after he participated in the Apollo Alliance’s release of “New Energy for America ,” a jobs study detailing the economic benefits of Apollo. At Apollo’s press conference Angelides stated “I am well aware that the way in which we invest capital can shape not only the contours of our economy, but also the future of our communities, our society, and our environment for decades to come.” The Apollo Alliance is working with labor leaders in California . California Labor Federation Exec. Secy. Treas. Art Pulaski, also attending the press conference, stated “The California Apollo Project is about our future,” said Pulaski. “We need strong public investment in real job creation, not corporate tax breaks that create long term deficits.”
On the East Coast, New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton called for public investment in renewable energy on the scale of the Apollo space program, noting that “significant federal investments in the space program” and other initiatives have brought significant benefits to the United States . She noted that Japan and Europe “have made big commitments to advancing these technologies with significant public investment... we must do the same.”
Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania Governor Rendell announced several progressive energy initiatives for Pennsylvania . He proposed a new “green tax holiday” for purchases of energy efficient appliances. In addition, the Governor’s budget extended the Pennsylvania Energy Harvest an investment initiative that provides financial tools to encourage clean and renewable energy projects. Over the last several years, Pennsylvania has doubled the amount of green energy that they use. This week, Governor Rendell directed state agencies to make 20 percent of the state’s energy needs met by new energy technology.Apollo is working with leaders around the country to bring about a better energy future. SEC Wants Rogue States Ties Disclosed In the latest federal funding bill, Congress directed the SEC to identify U.S.-listed companies with ties to states that sponsor terrorism and to require more disclosure to investors about corporate operations in high-risk areas. President Bush signed the bill two weeks ago but noted that accompanying reports "do not have the force of law" and "are not legally binding." "We are very concerned that the creation of this office could be a first step toward politicizing the U.S. capital markets and would set a bad policy precedent," the Securities Industry Association wrote in a recent letter to SEC Chairman William Donaldson.
