California Panel: Don't Use Diebold Touch-Screen Voting Machines
"California should ban the use of 15,000 touch-screen voting machines made by Diebold Election Systems from the Nov. 2 general election, an advisory panel to Secretary of State Kevin Shelley recommended Thursday. By an 8-0 vote, the state's Voting Systems and Procedures Panel recommended that Shelley cease the use of the machines, saying that Texas-based Diebold has performed poorly in California and its machines malfunctioned in the state's March 2 primary election, turning away many voters in San Diego County. The recommendation affects 15,000 Diebold touch-screen machines in San Diego, Solano, Kern and San Joaquin counties. Thousands more machines made by Diebold and other manufacturers in 10 other counties are unaffected, although the panel is to make a recommendation regarding them next Wednesday... Panel member Marc Carrel, an assistant secretary of state, said he was 'disgusted' by Diebold, which has 'been jerking us around.' "

Diebold: 'We Were Caught'
"It is an uncommon day when the nation's second-largest provider of voting systems concedes that its flagship products in California have significant security flaws and that it supplied hundreds of poorly designed electronic-voting devices that disenfranchised voters in the March presidential primary. Diebold Election Services Inc. president Bob Urosevich admitted this and more, and apologized 'for any embarrassment.' 'We were caught. We apologize for that,' Urosevich said of the mass failures of devices needed to call up digital ballots. Poll-workers in Alameda and San Diego counties hadn't been trained on ways around their failure... Unknown thousands of voters were turned away at the polls. 'We're sorry for the inconvenience of the voters,' Urosevich said. 'Weren't they actually disenfranchised?' asked Tony Miller, chief counsel to the state's elections division. After a moment, Urosevich agreed: 'Yes, sir.' "

Bush Cooks the Books: Accounting Method Yields Bigger Deficit
WASHINGTON - The federal government, if it used an accounting method preferred by Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, would have turned in a deficit of $665 billion in 2003. That's bigger than the figure recognized as the budget deficit for last year, which clocked in at just more than $374 billion. The larger figure, included in a Treasury Department report Friday, is based on a method of accounting in which expenses are booked when they are incurred — not when payments are made. Greenspan has said this accrual accounting method provides a better picture of the government's obligations and assets.

WASHINGTON - After days of hedging on the issue, the Bush administration made clear Friday that Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide should hand power over to his constitutional successor in order to avoid further chaos in the country.

Accusations 'have shaken relations with Westminster'
Clare Short's accusation that British intelligence officers bugged the office of Kofi Annan, secretary-general of the United Nations, has shaken relations between Westminster and the intelligence community, insiders disclosed yesterday, despite Tony Blair's efforts to limit the fallout. Ms Short's claim that she saw "transcripts" of bugged conversations between Mr Annan and others is thought by officials to have damaged the intelligence agencies' ability to function effectively because it has served as a stark warning that even the most senior officials cannot necessarily be relied on to maintain secrecy.

Things will come to a head in this country before the next election - all of the talk in the wind lately of what the administration will do to create a military government and scrap the constitution, if there's another terrorist attack. My strong belief is that this administration "let" the WTC attack happen to allow themselves the leeway to go forward with the grab for Afghan gas, poppies and Iraqi oil, let alone the "Patriot" Act. I watched the economy tank after Bush took office, I think because of people's fear. Then I've seen Bush dismantle programs and let his buddies pick up the pieces, just like the crumbling of the Soviet Union. Doesn't it seem strange that the head of the "free" world is the son of the CIA chief as is the president of Russia the ex-KGB chief and in the middle east Sharon is the ex-chief of Mossad? Each of these 3 bums are using the same tactics to consolidate power, in their respective fiefdoms: Chechnya, Palestine and GWB's Taliban, all bringing fear so the Great Wicked can offer his protection racket.

The president's real goal in Iraq
To address the terrorism threat, the president's report lays out a newly aggressive military and foreign policy, embracing pre-emptive attack against perceived enemies. It speaks in blunt terms of what it calls "American internationalism," of ignoring international opinion if that suits U.S. interests. "The best defense is a good offense," the document asserts. The report's repeated references to terrorism are misleading, however, because the approach of the new National Security Strategy was clearly not inspired by the events of Sept. 11. They can be found in much the same language in a report issued in September 2000 by the Project for the New American Century, a group of conservative interventionists outraged by the thought that the United States might be forfeiting its chance at a global empire.

911 Report: Rice Lied About Pre-911 Intelligence

A Cynical Manipulation
Following President Bush's hour-long interview with NBC's Tim Russert, we can now state conclusively that President Bush deliberately misled the American people and continues to do so.
Item: Bush claims he was acting on the best intelligence there was when he decided to go to war. Fact: The intelligence given to Bush was full of warnings, caveats, disagreements and doubts as to its reliability. All of this was expunged, and Bush and his crew stated as a dead certainty that Saddam Hussein had a large stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. One could go on and on. Bush does not seem to grasp that a policy of pre-emptive wars requires dead-on accurate intelligence. Despite all the errors in his so-called war on terrorism, Bush has not fired a single person. He absolutely refuses to hold himself or anybody in his administration accountable.

Bush Names Pryor to Bench, Dodging Democrats (RA)

More Provocation
THE NOMINATION of Alabama Attorney General William H. Pryor Jr. to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit was, from the beginning, a provocation on the part of the Bush administration. Yesterday Mr. Bush made that provocation all the more provocative by installing Mr. Pryor -- who has been held up by a Democratic filibuster -- by recess appointment. Mr. Pryor is the second judge the president has placed on the bench using this procedure, which allows the president to bypass Senate confirmation for appointments made on a temporary basis. The result is that Mr. Pryor will be a judge for now, but he will leave office unless both Mr. Bush and a filibuster-proof Republican Senate majority win election this year. In other words, his prospects of longer-term service on the bench will be bound up with the electoral fate of the Republican Party -- exactly the sort of political dependency from which judges are supposed to be insulated.

9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire
The film will move beyond the substance of policy and ideology to examine how the Bush Administration has used 9/11 and the war on terrorism to sell the American people on a radical and controversial neo-conservative agenda. It will focus specifically on how the administration has deflected attention away from the substance of its policies by tapping into a virtual storehouse of masculine archetypes and American mythology – an archive with deep roots in the American imagination and deep connections to popular American definitions of nationalism, patriotism, and what it means to be “presidential”. In doing so, the film will explore how the administration has used this masculine imagery and rhetoric to advance the larger ideological aims of the right-wing establishment – tapping into a warrior ethos of rugged individualism to justify and sell harsh responses to social and economic instability here and abroad. This analysis aims to anticipate what is almost certain to be the political strategy of Bush’s political consultants during the 2004 campaign: the continued and accelerating use of anxiety-producing rhetoric; of imagery and language designed to offer comfort in the form of traditional masculine strength and power; and of tactics designed to feminize and question the strength of those who question the wisdom of current policy. The documentary will explore the cultural power of these political tactics: their anti-democratic potential to shut down critical thinking and debate, and their capacity to manufacture consent to policies that often work against popular mainstream interests.

Rally has odd sense of humor
During a Feb. 5 meet-the-candidate night for the newly formed College Republicans U. chapter -- not to be confused with the older and more established College Republicans -- representatives for several candidates revved up the jovial crowd with such statements as "We need to put an end to the liberal Matheson era" and support "the Democrat killers." As the audience giggled off and on, Mike Clement, representing congressional candidate Tim Bridgewater, spoke excitedly about Republican successes when College Republicans work hard, citing the victory of Norm Coleman in the 2002 U.S. Senate race in Minnesota. As Clement bantered with the audience, one Republican gadfly noted that they defeated former Vice President Walter Mondale in that race, adding: "We had to kill off Wellstone to get it." He was referring to the death in a plane crash of Sen. Paul Wellstone and his family before the election. An audio tape captures laughter. But both Clement and Danielle Fowles, acting chairwoman of the club, said they did not hear that comment and believe the laughter was just a continuation of the ongoing banter.

Things will come to a head in this country before the next election - all of the talk in the wind lately of what the administration will do to create a military government and scrap the constitution, if there's another terrorist attack. My strong belief is that this administration "let" the WTC attack happen to allow themselves the leeway to go forward with the grab for Afghan gas, poppies and Iraqi oil, let alone the "Patriot" Act. I watched the economy tank after Bush took office, I think because of people's fear. Then I've seen Bush dismantle programs and let his buddies pick up the pieces, just like the crumbling of the Soviet Union. Doesn't it seem strange that the head of the "free" world is the son of the CIA chief as is the president of Russia the ex-KGB chief and in the middle east Sharon is the ex-chief of Mossad? But gay rights activists say there's still plenty missing: the right to file joint state tax returns, for example, and 1,049 federal rights granted to married couples. Among those are Social Security survivor's benefits, Medicare and veterans' benefits, and the right to help naturalize a foreign-born spouse.
