Scott Sommers' Taiwan Weblog
The growing demand for quality language instruction in Taiwan has not been accompanied by an increase in information about jobs. A clearer understanding of the situation will assist students, educators, and employers in achieving a higher standard.

Founded in 1983, WES is the oldest of the major corporate English training providers in Taiwan. William's is a family-operated company; William, his wife, and brother perform most of the sales and administrative functions.

The company is structured along lines that are out-dated for this industry. There is no head teacher. In the past, William has provided some teachers with visas. Currently, no teachers have visas, and he has no plans to alter this policy. The office staff has a very high rate of turn over.

Despite claims on the Website that he will train you in his particular instruction technique, he provides no training. The information available in his company teaching techniques has little value. William offers reasonable support in terms of access to books and teaching aids, as well as copy machines, etc. There is no support network in his company to help teachers who may have trouble.

The pay is about market average for this type of teaching. As the Website states, his rate is between 600 and 750 per hour. He does not pay additional travel expenses, so you will have to negotiate this into the hourly rate before you start the job. William's wife handles the pay, as a result, you must submit your pay requests early or you stand the chance of having to wait until next month to get paid. Aside from this, you will never have a problem getting money from him. William and Paul are quite reasonable to discuss issues of money and pay with.

Due to an internal problem that occurred in 2001, William's has been loosing business. He also suffers from a shortage of experienced, high-quality teachers.  If you are willing to work and are reasonable good in the corporate classroom, he can still proviude you with a lot of hours. Bear in mind that William's can never be viewed as more than a temporary source of quick money.
