Spring Break in Taiwan
Traditionally, schools in Taiwan close for a one week holiday during the middle of the second term. Recently, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has abolished Spring Break in public schools. They have also put great presure on private schools to follow this order. Despite this, last year, private universities like Ming Chuan still held Spring Break. At the beginning of this year, the president of our university, Dr. Lee Chuan, announced that there would be no Spring Break. However, at the beginning of the spring semester, he announced that he had changed his mind, and there would be no classes held on April 1, 2, and 3. My understanding is that several other private universities did the same thing.
On April 25, I received the following e-mail from our director's office, "the MOE sent an official letter to all universities who held spring break without offering a full 18-week semester to their students (including MCU) all classes not taught on April 1, 2, 3 must be made up between now and the end of the semester (Graduating students: before May 16, All other students: before June 13)."
Bear in mind that this happened at what is probably the best place a foreign teacher can work.
