Scott Sommers' Taiwan Weblog
The growing demand for quality language instruction in Taiwan has not been accompanied by an increase in information about jobs. A clearer understanding of the situation will assist students, educators, and employers in achieving a higher standard.

EIE was founded by Stan Tsun in 2001. Stan was originally the chief salesman of William's English Service, but he and William had a dispute that led to Stan's leaving and creation of a rival company.

Much of the way in which Stan runs his company is modeled after WES. This is not completely fair, but EIE and William's share many more similarities than say EIE and Lado. EIE does have some teachers who operate as project managers and who have visas, however, I am not certain how competent they are or what kind of leadership role they play in the company. I think it is safe to say that working at EIE, you are pretty much on your own when it comes to teaching.

The pay at EIE is slightly higher than at William's (about $nt650-750 / hour) and it's pretty much negotiable. On the other hand, many of classes are in Taipei County and may take a while to find. Stan is a very straight guy. You won't have any trouble dealing with him or getting paid. He is extremely busy, and may be a bit late for meetings, but he that's the worst you can say about him.

EIE has grown enormously since it was founded. They have many classes and are constantly looking for teachers. If you are willing to work and are reasonably good in the English corporate class, there a lot of hours there. Bear in mind that EIE can never be viewed as more than a temporary source of quick money.

More on Spring Break

The saga of Spring Break continues. But this time, we have a happy ending.

The explanation for how the Spring Break problem will be handled is rather long-winded. Every student at Ming Chuan takes English all year every year. Every Friday from 1200 to 200 all classes are cancelled for club activites. The last day of the year, which is a Friday, club activities will be cancelled so that we can retest all the students in the school with the English Placement Test that we used in September to assess their levels.

I think this is brilliant. Who ever thought of this should get a medal. The point of all of this is that even at what is probabaly the best post-secondary employer in Taiwan, life is an emotional roller coaster.
