Parents Association of Taiwan Supports Scott's Position on the Bushiban
The truth is that they don't support really know that they support my position on the bushiban. And it's not really the Parents Assertion of Taiwan; it¡¦s really only Taoyuan County. But let me tell you what happened.
I'll refresh your memory. In an earlier post, I stated that, unlike Western social scientists, parents in Taiwan do not believe that schools here are very good. It is this belief that drives them to send their children to bushibans. Yesterday was Teacher's Day in the ROC. In response to a major demonstration in Taipei by teachers, http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/front/archives/2003/09/29/2003069682
the Taoyuan County Parents Association held their own demonstration claiming that teachers are just out for their own interests and don't care at all about children. Wang Hsiu-chin, a spokesman for the organization, had this to say, "The fact that almost all students attend cram schools outside of school proves that Taiwanese education needs improvement. Teachers should not be out protesting when they haven't done their job," http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/front/archives/2003/09/29/2003069683
While I do not claim this is evidence that I am correct about the quality of education in Taiwan, it does seem that at least some very vocal parents share my opinion.
