Why I Hate tealit.com
I'm like everyone else here, and I use www.tealit.com. Tealit has some OK stuff, but I'm bordering on the opinion that it's just not worth it. In case you don't know, tealit has a policy of censoring any reference that you can use to identify a person or Website. I suspect that it's so that you can't use their Website to do any advertising unless you pay them. Fair enough; it's their property. But it makes it hard to have a discussion.
For example, the disinformation season about Taiwan universities has begun. All the local hire guys that got hired and burned up last year are getting on the Net to tell you what a nightmare it is teaching at a Taiwan university. I've attempted to stop this at its source this year by posting before they can get momentum. I posted on Dave's, on www.formosa.com, and of course on tealit. Someone calling themselves Gigi posted a response to me which I have pasted below. The problem is that I can't post a response to Gigi because I would have to tell him/her where I teach and that we hire the most foreign teachers of any university in Taiwan. I know I can't do this on tealit because in the past, they have censored any reference I have made to this Website and even to the fact that I teach at Ming Chuan University.
I have little choice but to use this Website to deal with Gigi's concerns. Anyway, Gigi posted...

Well, from my personal experience at numerous colleges and universities, and from talking directly to teachers at universities and colleges, I will say this: if there are good situations at universities and colleges in Taiwan, they are far and few in between, and I certainly wouldn't recommend 99% of these situations to my worst enemy. Even the basics-pay, visa, are often withheld because of "beauacracy". Not to mention the impossible situations for students and teachers, lack of support, resources, curriculum, you name it.
And still, most of them make it very clear that they would "really prefer a PhD" just to make sure you feel like a loser.
Yes, I know of ONE person who is now having a good experience at a university in Taiwan. But, he has been here about 10 years, and this will be about the 7th one that he has tried.
So, Ok, maybe there are 1 or 2 good ones, but I think they're difficult to find, and probably impossible to find for a new person coming to Taiwan. |
