Day Sixty-Seven. Today’s Election Day in Houston. We’re having a run-off election that will determine our city’s mayor, controller, and a few city council members. I’m going to try to make it over to one of the campaigns today to help with get-out-the-vote calls. I say "try" because it’s taking me an awful long time to get out of the house today. I slept in, and am now eating my breakfast (cream-top yogurt, in case you’re wondering, with the ubiquitous iced soy lattes) even though it is already 12:30 p.m. Later on, I’m supposed to go over to my friend Dean’s so I can drop off an "I See Dean People" T-shirt to his wife, Melinda, and eat some of the ribs he’s cooking. Then, tonight, there’s the Election Night party for Bill White, who will hopefully become our new mayor today. But first, I have to go vote. It’s been quite a week. I found out at meet-up on Wednesday that we may be mounting a bus trip from Houston to Iowa for the last weekend before the caucus. We would be doing canvassing and get-out-the-vote calls and then partying after the caucus takes place at 12:01 a.m. on January 19th. On Thursday, I floated the idea to my boss of taking the time off, and at first she was kind of noncommittal about it. I have had a lot of absences this year, mostly because of my depression – those days I just don’t want to get out of bed. Fortunately, I don’t seem to have those days much at all anymore. But in any case, I knew trying to take time off next month was a little iffy. I had kind of resigned myself to not going. But then yesterday, we were at my desk finalizing some document or another, and she said, "You know, I thought about it more last night, and I really think we should make that Iowa trip happen. I know it’s important to you." That made my day. Then, last night, I found out the Lean for Dean! Project got a mention in the New York Times Magazine. Not by name, but a mention is a mention. The food report has been sorely neglected by me lately. But yesterday, there was yogurt, two iced soy lattes, a lemon pepper fettuccine Lean Cuisine, some dried apples, some cherry/berry trail mix, some cracked wheat crackers, three popsicles, and two pieces of turkey jerky (this time from Prasek’s Smokehouse – you can order it online, and it’s wonderful). you can order it online, and it’s wonderful). Right now Eddie is reading me the Rolling Stone 500 greatest albums list over the phone. He is checking off the ones he has, and so now I am telling him the ones I have, too. We don’t put too much stock in lists like this, but we are still music geeks enough to want to know how our record collections stack up. So far Eddie’s collection is winning. 1:13:51 PM |
