It has begun:

White House Defends Intelligence on Iraq

Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith held a Pentagon briefing to rebut what he called "a goulash of inaccuracies" in the news media concerning Pentagon actions regarding Iraq intelligence and Iran policy.

Feith said he wanted to "help lay to rest some stories that have been circulating about the Defense Department that are not true and are beginning to achieve the status of urban legends."

Feith said he did not know of any pressure exerted by Pentagon officials on CIA or other intelligence analysts to slant their findings to conform to a view that Iraqi weapons of mass destruction posed an imminent threat to U.S. interests.

See, here is what I was talking about in an earlier post.  By shouting "Conspiracy Theory" and "Urban Legend," the underlings try to head off the message.  These guys have been doing it for years, and getting away with it, but it's wearing thin.  When you have Bush blissfully unaware of how ridiculous he looked in Poland, even US media starting to ask questions, it doesn't seem so legendy anymore.  Perfect timing, then, that he takes the credit for "peace" in the Mideast.  First, the obligatory swipe at his predecessor:

"The failures and frustrations of the past have left many disbelievers in their wake," Abdullah said as he declared support for the peace plan. Bush told reporters later he was cautious about the outcome because other efforts have failed, most notably the collapse of an initiative by Bill Clinton at the end of his presidency.

Then howling understatement.

"I'm the master of low expectations," Bush said. "We accomplished what I hoped we'd accomplish.
