Powell takes one for the team
Hey Colin, don't you get tired of putting your credibility on the line for this Administration? Whether there are WMD in Iraq or not, Powell is relying on a bogus argument from authority: There must be WMD in Iraq, because the American people think they are there. The "American people" probably don't believe that there is a country called Myanmar, Mr. Powell, but it still exists.

"They created the science of setting the bar low," said John Weaver, the strategist behind the primary challenge to Bush by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). "In fact, they dug a trench and set the bar in it, and he's able to walk over it. They should get some credit for that. He's been able to get away with that." (Washington Post)
So will they continue to get away with it? It is hard to separate hope from rational assessment in circumstance like these, but I am inclined to think not. I have a strong conviction that 9/11 created a new context for the question of whether someone "approves" of the President: approving of the President was almost synonymous with approving of one's country. An election can create a new, partisan context; the President isn't out there representing the people of the US, but his party and himself. (I never thought Bush "represented" me in any substantial way, but apparently most people did.)
