The deal with the ketchup money
This story from the Washington Post addresses the issue about whether Kerry can use the Heinz money from his wife. For those who don't want to bother clicking, the upshot is that a lot of the money is in trust funds that he can't use, but there is still a lot left to buy nasty ads with.
I must say I am rather ambivalent about the prospect of a Presidential contest between two very wealthy men who aren't spending any public money. It would certainly not be a good precedent. On the other hand, there is no point in the Dems choosing a candidate who can't spend or raise enough money to keep up with the GOP mudslinging machine. I don't think this rules out a left-wing candidate. It would be a beautiful thing, actually, if someone could run for President on a million $100 donations from working and middle class voters who are willing to "buy the government back".
Incidentally, I believe that Mrs. Kerry would be the first divorced First Lady.
Thanks to The Barbaric Yawp for a kind mention of our blog. I don't know if I would describe myself exactly as a "Bushbasher", though. I could even imagine voting for him if he were running against Wavy Gravy. I do try to give him credit on some of the rare instances when it is due. For example, I am not yet convinced that this homelessness proposal is fundamentally evil. But I await the evidence...
