Time to fire our fact-checker A correction: Teresa Heinz wasn't divorced. Her first husband died in a plane crash. A speculation that turned out to be false: Betty Ford was divorced, so there is no potential "first" here. Patenting WMD There was an article yesterday on the website of the Brit journal Nature reporting that the US Army filed a patent for a grenade capable of delivering biological and chemical weapons. Bear in mind that a patent application has to contain a detailed description of the technology. Considering that use of these weapons is now tantamount to a crime against humanity, I wonder what they will patent next. Gas chambers? Torture racks? Are we going to send an army of patent lawyers to fight the evildoers?
Oddly enough, this story is no longer on the Nature website. Did Tony Blair call?
Howard Dean
It looks like we are in the midst of something of a Howard Dean boom. I still have to stand by my assessment, however, that the governor of a tiny state like Vermont simply cannot be elected President. In fact, I did a little research and I don't want to say anything I'll have to retract, but I am pretty sure that nobody has ever used the governorship of a state as small as Vermont as a springboard to the the Presidency. The nearest example would obviously be Clinton, but as I noted in my last post in this topic, Arkansas is about four times as populous as Vermont. More importantly, that was back when people were still talking about "the end of history", not anthrax and duct tape.
