Blogs I Read
It is so hot here. We went from rainy and in the 60's a couple of weeks ago to 90 and 90% humidity. Bleah.
This morning, Dave and I ran with the group. (We are "mentors" for a local marathon training group). I met my group at 7:00 am for a 6 mile run. Dave ran with his group at 7:30. I had to run earlier to go to graduation--more on that in a bit.
It was so hot and humid. Surprising, we did better than I thought we'd do for a 6 mile run with heat, hills and humidity. Running with a group is one of the best things I've ever done in my life. It is so much easier and when it's tough for one person, it usually tough for everyone else, too. The twist in today's run is that I got in trouble with the leader of the entire group. Whoops! Bad me. I own up to my subversive behavior. But it was a good run anyway!
On a lighter note, today was UNC Charlotte's graduation. This is the first one I've attended at UNCC. I have to admit that I've become a bit more cynical about graduation now that I'm not one of the folks "graditating." However, it is cool being one of the faculty members--although no one can remember which side we're supposed to wear our tassel or how to put on the "hoods," the colorful things that apparently go down your BACK. We got to walk in first and sit down and then watch all the students come in and try to pick out the ones we've taught. And despite being a very bad audience member, talking, chewing gum and squirming in my seat (I was also a bad student), I got a bit teary when the main student speaker (one of the graduating psychology students) shared to the audience of 20,000+ that she is an 8 year cancer survivor---and the audience interrupted her speech to applaud her. She was quite surprised and it seemed to touch her. The end of the ceremony was very nice, too, when all the students stand up and move their tassels for RIGHT to LEFT! (You wear it on the LEFT b/c you have LEFT school! <--my new memory trick) I'm geeky, but I do like big rituals and ceremonies like that.
Came home and Dave and I went to lunch and "antique-ing." However, I am entirely too much of a cheap ass to buy anything. I also think I might not be that good of a decorator. We've already had some fashion faux pas's (can that be plural?) around the house. And lately, I've been spending more time at Target and Home Depot and World Market than anywhere else. If you come to the house, you can tell!
BTW--check out the snob test--www.pbs.org/manorhouse. I scored 63%!
