Garden and Plant Update
We have pole beans! Those little buggars are growing high and mighty. They are reaching for the Pole to wrap themselves around (hence, their names). Actually, it's really a cheap ass (!) trellis from Home Depot, but they are havin' at it! Their neighbors on the same row, the garden peas, are not doing so well. We actually have a full grown pea pod. And another one appears to be trying to do something. But pretty much, I don't think we're going to be having a meal of fresh homegrown peas anytime soon. Actually, anytime this year.
That sunflower is still hanging on. I cannot imagine how. Hold up you little finger. Pinch the inside skin of your finger. That is exactly how much of that sunflower stem is still intact. But it continues to grow. Albeit, sideways in a curvy loop---but it's not dead yet! The other sunflower is growing by the hour now that the sun is actually out.
We have a tomato and a pepper--both of which are a bit deformed. The oregano is a gone-o. Basil, dill, mint, chives, and rosemary are surviving. (At this point in our garden, survival is considered victory, whether we actually eat anything or not) The cantalope and cucumbers both have blossoms, we'll see what happens. The real success story is the yellow squash. I believe tomorrow night we will be able to harvest the squash and have enough to a real meal. Wow! We started this in early April and only a few months later, we can actually eat something from the garden. If we had been pilgrims, we would have starved.
Azalea update: The pruning was a big success. The leaves look much better--they actually have leaves now. Unfortunately, I think my strategy for pruning (take off the big parts that look dead) has left a lot of holes in the azaleas. So that although they are leaf-y, they are hole-y, too. There are big spaces of nothin' in the middle azalea bushes. We're moving them to the back of the lot this fall, so hopefully, my pruning errors will not be so obvious.
Doggie class tonight. We have not been training well this week. Patches has no idea what Finish means. We'll have to cram a few lessons in this afternoon.
