Garden Update
The cantaloupe are taking over. (I discovered I've been misspelling Cantaloupe/Cantalope.) The exciting news is that I do have a few cantaloupe buds on the vines so there should be yummies coming out soon. But they are going everywhere. I'm fighting them off the tomatoes and they are trying to climb up the poles with the beans. Cucumbers are fine. The yellow squash are not as plentiful as they were. I have NO red tomatoes but tons of green ones. The zucchinis keep hiding under their leaves until they are enormous.
Yesterday I came home to see what goodies we might have for dinner and the two Japanese eggplants were ready. So, we had roasted veggies last night with all home grown produce! First, we started with a radish appetizer. We split the one mushy radish from the garden and decided that was not a good thing. Then we roasted. I started with the two tiny beets we "harvested" on Sunday. Those needed about an hour. Then we added in the one carrot, yellow squash, zucchini and the two eggplants with olive oil and rosemary for about 30 minutes. I thought the eggplant was delicious. Dave said the carrot had a definite earthy carrot-y taste. (Yes, ONE carrot. But at least this one was actually a carrot and not a weed). And there is nothing like roasted beets. Yum, Yum, Yum. I have enough left over today for lunch! Woohoo!
Of course, during dinner, Patches decided he needed to herd us from the dinner table. He's barking loud enough to make the appliances ring and we're looking at the ceiling to "punish" him. I decide, OK, he needs a bone. So I give him a new cheese flavored cornstarch bone. He's all excited, gnaws on it for 3 minutes and then sprints out the doggie door to bury it. Patches buries rawhide bones on a regular basis (really digging a hole and marking it with his nose). And they are such lovely treats when he finds them again after the rain. But a cornstarch bone is likely to melt if it's buried and then it rains. So I run out after him to bribe him to give me the bone back. The first time, I take a milk bone. He gives up to the cornstarch bone quicky. The second time, he's a little more devious. I throw all his favorite toys across the back yard. He runs as hard as he can to them, but won't drop the bone. Finally, the neighbor's dog comes out and Patches drops the bone to say hello. I grab it and we go back to the house. I also played with a few toys with him on the way back to reward him for dropping the bone, although I know he didn't do it on purpose. We ran for a mile this morning. He was very excited to be back out there. He hasn't limped since Saturday. I can only run a couple of days per week until his legs build up strength.
Off to pick up the wedding pix and then to work! I'm very excited about the pictures!!!
