An update on the Zoo
Things between the cats and the dog are getting better by the day. Duncan is finally able to laze about in a sun spot without Patches constantly hovering over him. Scarlett is back to her mad feline dashes around the house and up the furniture at sunrise and sunset. Patches only follows part of the time. We're using puppy gates more as suggestions to where Patches shouldn't go (e.g., the cats' food dishes) than actual barriers to his roamings.
Of course, there are still problems. Dave found a running shirt of mine which apparently took a field trip outside. I caught Duncan just 30 minutes ago deciding that our picnic basket was a new litter box. Are we out of Feliway, the natural cat sedative/anti-male-peeing agent, again? No, it had been unplugged. Patches becomes a hyper sensitive watch dog whenever the cats yak (and we have to stop him before he tries to clean up). We now need to work on spraying prevention.
All in all, it's so much better. It will be the best when we can go an entire day with no hissing and no herding. That will be our sign that all is well!
