Classes started today
It's always crazy at the beginning of the semester. I'm really excited, though, about my new class. I was not really looking forward to this class, but the students look eager and attentive and I'm getting excited about the material again. I've taught this class at least 5 or 6 times and I know what happens. By the end of the semester, it's going to be pure craziness. Students are going to be working on their own final projects and they'll all be at different places with different needs. It's not nearly as calm as herding cats---this is definitely more like driving a stage coach with 15 different horses all on different reins. It's barely controlled craziness.
I had to scare them today, too, because this class separates the puppies from the big dogs. It's a really tough class---not because of the material we cover (which is only a little lie) but because of how much work they have to do. I'm there to help them through it in any way I can, but they are going to have to put a lot of work in this class to get the grade they want. Yikes!
Dave is teaching his first class at the business school tonight. I'm excited for him and nervous, too. All of us remember our first lecture of our first class. I can't wait to hear tonight how it went!!
I tried to run this morning and couldn't. I’m pretty sure what I have is called by one of many names: Osteitis Pubis, or a very mild case of symphysis pubis dysfunction are the common ones. The last name sounds much, much, much worse than what is going on with me. (Mom: do NOT! I repeat! Do NOT have a conniption fit at this point!)
Essentially, I think I sprained my pelvis. The signs are localized pain in the middle of the pelvis, in an area I can only describe on this blog as “not a place I’d point to in public.” Another sign is pain when lifting a leg (I have that) or lots of popping, etc in one’s hips (I do not have that). The scoop is that the pelvic bone is better described as a pelvic joint connected by ligaments. Because of relaxin (which loosens these joints during pregnancy), my pelvic joints are a wee bit out of whack and my ligaments have become irritated after long runs. Hence, why it’s like a sprain.
The primary causes are pregnancy and being an athlete, especially a woman athlete in or past her mid-thirties. I only noticed it after long runs. So guess what? No long runs for me for a while. I don’t have a problem with short runs (less than 6 miles) and to be honest, this week’s half marathon was much better than last week’s 10 miles. But I can tell something is up. So I need to let the ligaments heal and then everything should be fine. This week, I’m walking a lot and going to the Y for water exercise and yoga. I figure it’s a good idea to cross train anyway. I go to the doctor next week and we’ll see what he has to say. The chiropractor already said that running is looking iffy for me, but he did some mild adjustments to help get my pelvic bones back in alignment.
I may be blogging a night for a while. I need to use the mornings to focus on work!
