The Cake

As I have mentioned before, I am no baker.  It turned out to be a good thing that my parents were around while I baked the cake, first so I could show them the picture of what it was supposed to look like...so in the end, they wouldn't think I'd chosen to make them a crappy ass dessert.  The cake part turned out pretty good, although I think it could have been improved with a nice soaking in rum or bourbon.  But then again, wouldn't everything???

The icing, which was supposed to be the highlight of the cake, is what became the main problem.  It was supposed to be a fluffy marshmallow topping, but I didn't beat it long enough.  The result was that after dinner, the icing had pretty much pooled to the bottom of the cake creating a sort of ring of fluff that wasn't all that appealing.  And the way I iced it created the leaning tower of fluffy Pisa which was hard to cut.  And finally, the icing was waaaaay too sticky sweet with bits of marshmallow icing stuck to the table, the paper towel holder, and everyone's hands.

Of course, being the great parents (and soon to be grandparents!) that they are , they loved it, raved about it, and ate as much as was humanly possible.  They even acted excited when I plunked a humongous portion of the cake on a plate for them to take home the next day.  Even my suggestions of tossing it at rude motorists was met with shock and dismay.

Ok.  I'm completely freaking out about a revise and resubmit (and we will publish) research publiction due tomorrow.  I'll blog more later when my head is not going to pop off of my body.
