Can you Hear Me Now?  Good!

The doctor says I’m going to live.  Yes, that’s actually what he said when I completed all of my tests and procedures yesterday.  Thank God me ear is not the beginning of some sort of body rot.

The scoop first is that I had a scab on my eardrum from last month’s rupture.  Lovely!  After removing that, I told him I couldn’t really hear much better so he sent me off for a hearing test.  I had to listen to and repeat a variety of words as well as tell them when I heard a series of beeps in either ear.  The good news is that my right ear (the unruptured one) is in great shape.  The better news is that the left one isn’t all that worse.  I can’t hear sounds in the higher regions, but pretty much my left ear is normal.  It’s just that because of my newly discovered allergies which have stopped up my left ear, I’m not hearing in stereo.  And that is making my hearing feel “off”.

Here’s what occurs to me:  My dad has serious hearing loss in one of his ears.  For the last week around the house, I haven’t been able to understand much of what Dave says and he’s had to repeat what he says several times for me to get it.  At a crowded campus reception this week, I couldn’t understand much of what people were saying around me.  My ear is officially normal, and I am missing a lot of what is going on.  What must it be like for my dad and other folks who have much worse than 10% temporary hearing loss?

Rough.  I will tell you right now that it is rough on them.  So be kind and speak clearly and distinctly to them.  Give ‘em a smooch and just say it again.

Run run run runaway

Well, I didn’t run away, but I did run a ways this morning. For the first time all semester, I got an early morning run in.  It even surprised me.  How I did it was by getting to bed around 9:15, reading for 45 minutes (Harry is past the second TriWizard Championship task, and Hermione was just accused of flirting with both him and Krum by the gossip columnist), and turning out the lights by 10.  So when the little guy awoke at 5:30 for his early morning snack, I fed him and then was wide awake and rested.  He and Dave went back to sleep, and I got up and went for a run.  Honestly, it’s the first time I’ve woken up rested all semester, too.

My new plan is to start having early dinners because 1) I think Conor is ready to start eating our food, too as long as we puree it, and 2) we can get our chores done earlier if we eat earlier. I would love to be able to start running again in the mornings.

Gettin' poked at with a stick

I've been stuck by Birdie!

What follows is a list of different occupations. You must select at least five of them. You may add more if you like to your list before you pass it on (after you select five of the items as it was passed to you).

Of the five you selected, you are to finish each phrase with what you would do as a member of that profession. Then pass it on to three other bloggers.

Here's that list:

If I could be a scientist...
If I could be a farmer...
If I could be a musician...
If I could be a doctor...
If I could be a painter...
If I could be a gardener...
If I could be a missionary...
If I could be a chef...
If I could be an architect...
If I could be a linguist...
If I could be a psychologist...
If I could be a librarian...
If I could be an athlete...
If I could be a lawyer...
If I could be an innkeeper...
If I could be a professor...
If I could be a writer...
If I could be a backup dancer...
If I could be a llama-rider...
If I could be a bonnie pirate...
If I could be a midget stripper...
If I could be a proctologist...
If I could be a TV-Chat Show host...
If I could be an actor...
If I could be a judge...
If I could be a Jedi...
If I could be a mob boss...
If I could be an Avon Lady...

Now here are my answers:

If I could be a chef... I’d have a small restaurant where people could come and eat healthy but tasty and filling foods.  Each dish would be reasonably priced with reasonable portions but out of this world flavor.  Wine would be served by the glass (and wouldn’t cost the same as a bottle at the grocery store) and each dish would have a specific wine recommended for it.  Cheese and herbs and artisan breads would be featured.  And the atmosphere would be open and the tables close so that everyone who came would end up talking to each other and I could come out and visit with folks while they ate.

If I could be a gardener... I would create beautiful landscapes with mazes of pebble paths surrounded by massive aromatic and colorful flowers.  People would walk through my flower gardens with a friend, a lover or a good book and find a secluded bench on which to sit and watch nature and feel God.

If I could be an athlete... I would participate in triathlons because it’s more of a supportive instead of competitive sport.  And my body would be one big muscle from shoulders to toes.  And I could eat everything I want and not gain an ounce.  You think I’m kidding?  Check these folks out.

If I could be a judge... I would be known as fair and just.  I would provide sentencing to rehabilitate the guilty and I would exonerate the innocent.  I would make a difference in the lives of the people in my court.  At the end of my trials, the prosecution and the defense would be satisfied that justice had been served.

If I could be an innkeeper... I’d have big rooms with fluffy beds and working fireplaces.  Every person staying in my inn would leave rested and inspired.  Lifelong friends would be made during the healthy, yummy breakfasts that I served every morning.  I’d also be doing so well as an innkeeper that I could hire someone else to do all the cleaning.

So I’m noticing a theme for myself:  healthy, yummy, loving and I for other people to get along.  Have I ever mentioned that if I were an animal, I’d be a border collie?  Athletic and eager to keep the group together.

I’m passing this meme off by poking:

Carter, because I feel like he’s my brother blogger.

Carolina Karen, as we call here around here, because she has already had several adventures by changing jobs.

And

Motherhood Karyn because she’s all anonymous and I’m not really sure what she does!

OK.  Off to write some “work” as opposed to writing some “fun.”
