A picture named Little Conor.jpgHow can you resist a kiss monster attack from such a face?  I certainly coudn't resist it.  Who would want to?

No, Mommy.  I want to do it myself.

We’re just back from visiting Dave’s family.  It was a great time except that the little monkey was in the midst of a great stranger anxiety.  He only let one of Dave’s sisters hold him.  The rest of the time, he wanted to be in our arms or in our laps.  In fact, I think I grew some sort of baby magnet in that every time I put Conor down and walked away, I could see him trailing behind me, commando crawling along until he could reach my leg and hug it.  Really, he didn’t even hug it.  He’d just bump his head against my leg as if it were some wall he was determined to crawl through.  Apparently, the baby magnet is in my ankle.

At one point, after holding him for 1 and a half hours while I was talking to the women folk, I’d put him down, go sit on one side of the room, wait until he arrived and then move back to the other side.  I figured we were helping out his crawling and I was getting a bit of a break, too.  (Yesterday, on his own, when we arrived home he actually got on all fours and took a few “real” crawls.  It was very exciting!)

Our other big news is his absolute refusal to be spoon fed any more.  We’re having to change our whole strategy of feeding and cooking.  Bananas, a previous favorite, are right out.  He has a hard time picking them up because they are so slippery and it frustrates him (I rolled them in some ground up oats this morning and that worked better).  Oddly, steamed sweet potatoes, zucchini and broccoli are hits, I think because he can pick them up easily.  Of course, if it was up to him, it would be all Cheerios all the time (I wish I could find some organic version of them.  Does anyone know of any?)  At 11 months, we’ve also decided to go ahead with some wheat products (you’re supposed to wait for one whole year.  We’re fudging so the child will eat).  He’s a big fan of whole wheat pancakes and as of this morning, whole wheat toast.

The dog is thrilled with this new stage.  Thrrrrrrrrillled.  This is clearly the best part about having a puppy in the house!!!  Did I add that in addition to feeding himself and smearing food all over his head and face, Conor’s next favorite thing is dangling food off the side of the high chair to see what Patches will do?  Newsflash:  he will lick the food and if all works out well, the baby drops it.  The other option is that the baby eats it which we’re trying to discourage.

I didn’t get as much work done as I’d hoped before we left for the trip.  The result is a herd of hives moseying around my neck.  Yes, it is as pretty as it sounds.

Off to relieve some stress and hopefully some hives by accomplishing some work.

Wait!  Final cute story:  yesterday in the airport, I was the victim of my son’s version of a kiss monster.  I was holding him while he stood in my lap and he was looking at the people behind us.  Then he turned and planted a big wet one on my cheek.  And then my chin.  And then my other cheek.  By the time I finally got Dave’s attention, he was sucking my nose!  I think what was happening is that he was trying to do to me what I do to him sometimes:  a whole kiss attack on one side of his face, his neck, back up and around his face, and to other side of his neck.  While waiting for the plane, I received three baby kiss monster attacks and pretty much, he was able to wash my entire face in drool.  A little less tongue in the kisses, son!  I probably should have stopped him because I’m sure it looked odd in the airport lobby.  However, there is a finite amount of time my son is going to want to give me kisses, and I have no intention of cutting it short or denying myself one baby kiss from him.
