The Future Mama Anxiety Files

Let me start this blog by firmly reassuring all my friends and family that I am NOT staying up late and worrying about all the things that are out of our control about the baby's health.  These thoughts are not preoccupying my time and energy to an enormous degree. They are simply on my mind. So don't call me up and tell me to stop worrying because "that is messing everything up."  Ahem.  You know who you are.  And even if you didn't say it out loud, I heard you thinking it anyway.

I do think it's only natural that a woman, at my age, with a new bun would be concerned.  I keep pointing out to myself that the probability of something being wrong with the baby is less than the probability of getting pregnant while using birth control pills.  That helps.  But, as I've pointed out when I've taught this concept in class, over a large enough number of women, it is going to happen to someone.  There's nothing "special" about these women that it happens to except that they were unlucky enough to lose these at these odds.  So, I'm not freaking out about it, but it is on my mind.  To be honest, there is a much, much higher chance of my miscarrying than there is of there being a genetic or chromosonal abnormality with the bun.  About the same probability of getting pregnant while using some condoms.  BTW--both stats on the effectiveness of contraceptives are the "typical" use not the "perfect" use.

Another area of concern is how big this bun is going to be when it pops out.  Dave is 6'4".  I am 5'8".  Our doctor said not to worry about that:  it's really how big the parent was a birth.  I was a nice weight--a little less than 7 lbs.  Dave was close to 10 lbs.  AHHHHHHHH!  Dave's sister recently had her birth induced 2 or 3 weeks before she was due because the baby was already 9.5 lbs. Her quote:  "This baby is fully cooked."  Dave's other nieces and  nephews are also humongous:  The oldest nephew is 6'5".  The oldest niece 6'1".  My 15 year old nephew is almost as tall as my 6'3" brother.  Holy.  Fricking. Doodle.

I need to get to work and freak out there.  :-)
