Return of the King!
Friday Fact: In the beginning of elvish history, the Valar came to the elves("Quendi") in the place where they first awoke and summoned them to come to Valinor. Those who refused the call were called the Avari, the Unwilling. All of those who set out on the journey were called the Eldar. There were three groups within the Eldar, the Vanyar and the Noldor, all of whom came to Valinor, and the Teleri, some of whom turned aside before they crossed the ocean to Valinor (also known as "Aman"). Of the Teleri who stayed in middle earth, most of them made it as far as Beleriand, and those were all called the Sindar. Some of the Teleri turned aside at the Misty Mountains, and these were called the Nandor, except for a few who later crossed the mountains and settled on the borders of Beleriand, who were called the Laiquendi. The Sindar, Nandor, and Laiquendi were together refered to as the Umanyar, the Eldar who were "not of Aman". All those elves that made it to Valinor (the Vanyar, Noldor, and many of the Teleri) were refered to as the Calaquendi ("elves of the Light") while those who never came to Valinor (the Umanyar and the Avari) were called the Moriquendi ("Elves of the Darkness"). Galadrial was of the Noldor, and one of the Calaquendi (she was actually born in Valimar). Her husband, Celeborn, who was born in Beleriand, was a member of the Sindar, and thus Moriquendi. Most of the elves of Lorian were either Sindar or Nandor, as were most (if not all) of the elves of Mirkwood. Many Caliquendi still resided in Rivendell, including Glorfindel, as well as many Sindar. Elrond was born in Middle-earth, but his heritage was unusual, with elves, men, and Maia among his ancestors.
