Elves may be immortal, but they still can die, and many many elves have died throughout the ages of Middle Earth, mostly in battle. From the Kin-slaying at Alqualonde in Valinor, up to the battles against Sauron in the War of the Ring, elves fight and die. Many of Legolas' kin died in the Battle of Five Armies at the end of the Hobbit, for example. So on the face of it, the notion (stated in the Appendices to the Fellowship extended version DVD) that Legolas was confronted by death for the first time when Gandalf fell in Moria is inaccurate. However, in another sense, it is true, because when elves die, their spirits do not leave the world, but rather "dying they are gathered to the halls of Mandos in Valinor, whence they may in time return." Whereas, when men die either of old age or in battle, their spirits leave Middle Earth utterly. This, then, is why Elves grieve so much for the loss of Luthien, who married a mortal man, Beren, and bound her fate to his mortality. Elves believe that they will be reunited with those kin who have died and gone to the halls of Mandos, but there will be no reunion with mortals who have died.
